Walters Mark M.D CHORIChildren’s Research Institute's Mark Walters, MD  Grant Award Recipient

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) awarded Mark Walters, MD, director of Children's Hospital Oakland's Blood & Marrow Transplant Program, a planning grant, worth $55,000. The CIRM award supports multidisciplinary teams of scientists planning to pursue therapies for specific diseases. Dr. Walter’s team is planning a project devoted to extending the use of blood stem cell transplantation for genetic diseases, such as sickle cell anemia in California.

CHORI Children's Hospital Oakland Research InstituteChildren’s Research Institute in Top 5 for NIH Awards <

According to a report produced by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, in 2007, Children’s Hospital Oakland’s research institute ranked 5th in the nation in terms of total grant amount awarded to children’s hospitals from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and received more NIH grants in 2007 than any other children’s hospital on the West Coast. Children’s was granted 41 awards totaling over $23 million dollars from the NIH in 2007.

Bertram Lubin MD Children’s Research Institute's Bert Lubin, MD Executive Profile 

San Francisco Business Times focused on Bert Lubin, President of Children's Hospital Oakland's research institute in an executive profile.

"Background: An accomplished jazz drummer, Lubin instead pursued a career in pediatric health research, and over 31 years has shaped CHORI into one of the nation's leading children's health research organizations. CHORI also has a strong local focus: Its sickle cell program, for example, has advanced knowledge of the disease globally while helping to treat patients at Children's Hospital Oakland.

During Lubin's tenure, CHORI has grown from extramural funding of $500,000 to a budget of $50 million. The institute has 30 principal investigators, about 300 employees and collaborations in Vietnam, India and many other countries.

Announcing Hand in Hand: Our New Magazine

Hand in Hand Magazine, Children’s Hospital Foundation’s newest celebrates the stories of the hospital’s courageous patients, committed medical staff and researchers, and our dedicated and generous donors and supporters.

The premier issue’s cover girl, Mattie Hollenbach is a lifelong patient at Children’s and has had two open heart surgeries at Children’s. If you did not receive a copy in the mail, email us and we’ll send one to you. Check our publications page in August for an online version.


Specialty Care Center ModestoChildren’s New Specialty Care Center in Modesto

A new specialty care center in Modesto joins Children’s Hospital Oakland’s Network of Care. Children’s Specialty Care Centers in Brentwood, Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, Larkspur -- and now Modesto, are part of Children's mission to ensure kids have access to world-class health care close to home.

The Children's Specialty Care Center Modesto is located at 4016 Dale Road, Modesto.
